What is post-ablation syndrome?

Post-ablation syndrome refers to a set of symptoms that may occur after a surgical endometrial ablation procedure - a surgery that destroys the endometrial lining of the uterus as a form of treatment for heavy menstrual bleeding.

The symptoms may include pelvic pain, cramping, bloating, vaginal discharge/bleeding, and general malaise. They may last for several days or a few weeks. Although rare, more severe symptoms such as high fever, vaginal bleeding and heavy discharge, or severe abdominal pain may indicate an infection or other complications and require immediate medical attention.

The exact cause of post-ablation syndrome is not fully understood, but it may be related to the presence of residual endometrial tissue, inflammation, or hormonal fluctuations. Women who undergo hysteroscopic ablation - that is, ablation done through a scope inserted through the cervix - are more likely to experience post-ablation syndrome than those who have other ablation techniques.

Treatment for post-ablation syndrome may involve medications to control pain and inflammation, hormonally-related symptoms, or antibiotics if an infection is suspected. If symptoms persist, further evaluation by a specialist may be necessary.
